Some of my Favorite game intros - Sunday June 28 2009 22:16:06
I was playing the Witcher tonight and every time I do, I can't help but watch its intro.

Game intro's should show you what the game is about, they should draw you in the best way they can. The Witchers intro is near perfect as it gives nothing away but introduces you to the world and the main character.

This got me thinking of other intros I have enjoyed over the years and thanks to the power of you tube you to can see them.

To start with, here is The Witcher intro which got me going on this post.

First up this is a real bonus as I only discovered this tonight.

Frontier: First Encounters always impressed me as its intro was all real time in game. The views of the planets sweeping past etc. Anyway while seaching you tube I came across this:

Its a port of FFE to direct 3d and it looks fantastic. I'll dig up more info on this later.

Another game from the same era was Mechwarrior 2. This was back before mechwarrior started to suck.

Origin always did epic intro's and the Wing Commander 3 one was no exception. What with Mark Hamel and Malcolm McDowell.

Going back to the Amiga days one of its technically stunning for its time but ultimately strange is the shadow of the beast 2 intro. I think the below is from a pirate version of the game as it is missing a few key scenes. Either that or they released it with a extended intro. I will need to see if I can find the full intro on you tube:

Another world ( Out of this world in the USA for some insane reason ) was another great stunning amiga first intro. This version is taken from the updated HD version which came out on the pc a few years back. Real time polygon intros were rare and I think this was one of the first games to ever use them.

The PSX had some good intro's I used to like the Soul Blade / Edge intro but hearing the strange rock mid intro is a bit cheesy now. Still a classic what with disappearing clothing and pirates you can't go wrong.

Blizzard have always made great intro's. They have so many but I choosed the Warcraft 2 intro as it was the one that really made me take notice of blizzards polish.

And to see how far they have come. There latest intro for World of warcraft:

Jedi Knight was one of the view intros that worked with live action actors.

I wanted to put in a C64 intro but for the life of me I can't remember any. Most of its intro's were static pictures and text but every so often you would get some samples or something animated.

Anyway there are a billion of other intro's I could have added but the above are the ones I remember. If you have any intro's to share, post them in my forums.
